We believe in eating in a sustainable, healthy way for the long term — changing your lifestyle for good and not just going on a crash diet. Clean eating is our go to, not dieting. Keto is an example of an extreme diet that may get you lean in the short run but will be unsustainable to continue for long. However, there are a few useful tenets within the keto diet that will help you to get lean for good. Here they are:
- Eat more avocado. I can’t say enough good things about this delicious little fruit. It’s super filling, has tons of healthy fats, and is so delicious. You can eat it for literally every meal of the day (including dessert). Make avocado toast, include it in your salad, make it a dip or a pudding, the list goes on and on. Mission Lean recipes use this ingredient very frequently.
- Don’t overdo the protein. Skip the protein shakes and bars. The keto diet encourages eating more fat while limiting the amount of protein. You should only be getting your protein from natural food sources – like salmon, cod and other seafood, avocado, oatmeal and other grains. There is absolutely no need to supplement your diet with unnatural or processed ingredients just to consume more protein in huge amounts. Eating healthfully in a balanced way should provide your body all of the protein that it needs.
- Don’t overeat fruits and vegetables. Hint: skip the juice bar. Unlike most diets which recommend as many fruits and vegetables as you can possibly eat, the keto diet limits most fruit (lots of sugar) and many vegetables (because some, like carrots, have more sugar/carbs.) While I encourage a healthy amount of fruit and veggies in a person’s diet… some people try to overdo it with juices and shakes and it’s just unnecessary. A healthy shake every once in a while (with both fruits and veggies) can be a good way to start the day if you’re not working out but should not turn into a meal replacing way of life.
- Eat more fatty fish. Fish is great to include into your diet ( make sure you get wild, and try not to over do it because of potential mercury poisoning and other issues.) 2-3 x a week is plenty.
